The moment has finally arrived and for the Mt Barker Football Club it has been a long time coming.

After more than two years of construction, setbacks and uncertainty, the new home of sport in Mt Barker will be unveiled on Saturday afternoon.

The $5.5 million Sounness Park oval will play host to the Bulls versus Royals in round three of the Great Southern Football League, which will act as a "soft opening" of the venue before the WAFL match between Claremont and Swan Districts next Saturday.

The goals posts for the new ground were erected on Monday as the final piece of the construction puzzle.

The manicured surface is a far cry to the underwater oval which shocked the club last season after a heavy winter downpour.

Bulls president Brad Hook said the finished ground had been a major boost to the club, who were allowed to train on it for the first time a fortnight ago after the Shire of Plantagenet underwent remedial work and rectified drainage issues which prevented its use last season.

"We have been talking about this for a couple of years now and to finally be here it's what we need as a club and town," he said.

"When the lights first came on you can't really explain the difference compared to running over at Frost (Park) where there was three globes compared to the best lights outside of the city."

The grounds dimensions of 160m long and 130m wide make it similar to Etihad Stadium.

Mr Hook was hopeful of a win this Saturday to begin a new era in fine style.

"There is so much focus on the WAFL game at the minute we need this soft opening this weekend to see how everything goes," he said.

"For the new ground and the season, we need to win this week."
