Bowling: Albany duo see off more fancied pairs

CAMERON NEWBOLDAlbany Advertiser

Middleton Beach bowlers Devina Edwards and Beryl Cooper pulled off a brilliant victory in the Women’s Country Week APIA pairs.

The women competed against 265 other pairs in the event and defeated their more fancied rivals Roma Dunn and Julie Lindsay from Dudley Park at the Osborne Park Bowling Club in late March.

The local duo defeated their opponents 19-14 and stopped any chance of the Dudley Park combination winning another Country Week pairs title.

Cooper, who also got to the last eight players in the singles event, said the whole week was a great success.

“This was my third year going with Devina and it is a thrill for both of us,” she said. She added that the whole club performed well, with eight women from Middleton Beach taking part.

Edwards said getting away to a good start in the final was vital. “We were just happy to get that far, but when we scored three on the first end, it was a perfect start,” she said.

Edwards, who has been bowling since 1985, believed the club would take out the fours title after winning the championship and league division locally in the fours, but they fell short getting down to the last 12.

Cooper, who started bowling four years after her partner, played 23 games at the tournament, losing only five while Edwards also lost five from her 18 matches.

“We said this was going to be our year in the fours, but we got the pairs instead.”
