Albany residents are being warned of fraudulent tradesman, known as ‘bitumen bandits’, after reports locals have been approached by the con-men.

Consumer Protection senior regional officer Iris Thomas says these men typically offer discounted rates and demand upfront payment.

“I have had reports from some consumers in the Albany area that they’ve been approached by the bitumen bandits,” she said.

“These itinerant traders use high pressure sales pitches to get consumers to agree to have their roofs repaired at supposedly low cost,”

Ms Thomas says despite the apparent cheap deal being offered, this is not usually the case.

“The cost of the job is often more than it’s worth and the work is usually sub-standard,” she said.

“It’s also difficult to track down these traders for a refund or to make a warranty claim if the consumer is not satisfied. These con-men offer cheap deals saying they have material left over from another job,”

This style of con-men is well known throughout Australia, with a reputation for targeting vulnerable members of the community such as seniors or people with disabilities.

If you believe you are being targeted, Ms Thomas has some advice.

“Don’t open your door. If you do speak to them, ask them to leave. If they refuse, they’re breaking the law,” she said.

“Record as much information as you can, such as their name and vehicle registration, and report them.”
