A Bremer Bay resident was surprised to discover a dead shark in the sand during a walk along a popular fishing beach this week.

Alice Reddington was taking a stroll on Short Beach at Bremer Bay with her family on Monday about noon when she took this snap of the beached shark, which she believes to be a two-metre mako shark.

The 33-year-old said it was the first time in five years she had seen a dead shark washed ashore.

"It does not happen that often that a healthy-looking shark washes up like that … I am just speculating but we thought it had probably been caught in a fishing net or thrown off a fishing boat as a by-catch," she said.

Mrs Reddington said there had been weekly shark sightings in waters around Bremer Bay over the past few months, which was not unusual during whale migration season.

"My husband Paul saw a white pointer the other week at Little Boat Harbour while he was catching squid in his dinghy offshore," she said.
