Groovin The Moo is one of Australia’s most loved and anticipated Regional Touring music festivals.

Each year GTM holds creative competitions in the lead-up to the event, generating artistic creations from talented music enthusiasts across Australia such as the GTM TEE Competition, a contest for T-shirt designs.

Promoter of GTM from Cattleyard Promotions, Stephen Halpin, said the competitions generate excitement and hype for the festival.

“There are a lot of very creative young people in regional Australia and we are always looking for ways to engage and to provide an avenue for our audience to display their talent,” he said.

The GTM TEE Competition has been running since 2010 and in its seventh year has proven popular with more than 397 entries this year with the number of entries rising each year.

Other GTM competitions with thousands of entries each year include “Shoot the Moo”, providing opportunities for aspiring photographers to document a GTM band and be part of the tour; “Sister Cities”, a visual arts project, and also the “Heaps Decent” competition, which offers workshops to up-and-coming local music producers, beat makers, lyricists and songwriters between the ages of 15 to 24.

This year’s T-shirt design had the brief of a Futuristic festival tee which Albany artist James Walmsley got creative with, entering multiple T-shirt designs that were all graphically designed, created, processed and developed.

One of Walmsley’s designs, Space Travellers, made it into the top 60 finalists, a design he said was a collection of his experiences travelling; experiencing new people with the idea of foreign connection and festivity — what festivals are all about.

“I have a big passion for art and graphic design and music festivals and the GTM competitions are incredible for creating masterpieces,” he said.

“My design is all about meeting new people and embracing the festival vibe of an intergalactic scenario; it’s about the interaction of meeting other people you don’t know through the love of music which is what festivals are all about.”

Walmsley said GTM is an amazing festival and that he felt stoked to have his T-shirt design recognised as a finalist.

“I felt stoked; I was not expecting to get my entry in as there is so much competition and so many amazing creations from people all over Australia,” he said.
