Albany's a best kept secret

The pristine beaches and hidden tourism wonders of Albany have been recognised on a national travel website surveying Australia’s best secret tourism hotspots.

Three Great Southern spots snuck into the Hooroo travel website’s Secret Spots top 40 list after a campaign calling for Australian travellers to share their favourite discoveries off the beaten track.

In Albany, pristine Little Beach at Two Peoples Bay, the abandoned ruins of the Point King lighthouse keeper’s house overlooking King George Sound and, further afield, Bremer Bay rounded out the Great Southern’s contribution to the top 40 survey finalists.

Little Beach was ranked the fifth best beach in Australia. City of Albany mayor Dennis Wellington said it was an excellent sign for the local tourism industry to have not one, but two local spots included on the national list.

But he said he wasn’t too surprised given the spectacular natural assets of the region.

“Little Beach was ranked the fifth best beach in Australia which is terrific, but I think it would be interesting to see the ones that beat it because it’s such a sensational spot and very well-deserving,” he said.

“It’s nice to be recognised in a national forum.

“Everyone who comes down here says it’s an ideal spot and they are living the dream when they visit, I think people who live here know that themselves already.”
