The University of WA is looking to expand its Albany campus to offer a wider variety of educational opportunities to prospective students and to keep young people in the city.

The new opportunities, in line with the City of Albany’s long-term strategic plan, will include more teaching and research programs and student accommodation.

City of Albany chief executive Graham Foster said the City was in discussions with UWA about expansion, and the talks would continue.

“The City is investigating possible sites and infrastructure requirements for potential future expansion, while recognising that this is a long-term goal,” he said.

“Becoming a ‘university town’ — and being recognised as a regional hub for education, science and technology — is a great vision to work towards. If realised, this vision would help keep young people in Albany.”

UWA Albany director Jennifer O’Neil said every year the campus was adding more areas of study.

“This year we have added a commerce degree with a full major in management to our list of undergraduate studies,” she said.

“Most students, regardless of their choice of discipline, can either complete their degree in Albany or complete a year to a year and a half in the region before having to head to Perth.”

Ms O’Neil said student accommodation was something the university was pursuing in the region.

“The City and UWA are working together with the GSDC to create accommodation opportunities for students in the region,” she said.

Ms O’Neil said student numbers at UWA Albany had increased over the last two years. A UWA spokesman said 26 students had been offered a place in arts, science and commerce degrees in Albany this year.

That is an increase of five from last year’s figures and double 2013’s enrolment.
