Albany prisoner on the run
A minimum security inmate at Albany Regional Prison may have stolen a prison vehicle to escape custody while working on a garden outside the jail.
Shane Gibbs, 27, serving a six-year sentence for robbery, burglary, assault and driving offences, was missing during a muster shortly before 1.30pm.
Gibbs, who uses the alias Paul Wright, was allowed to work outside the prison under Section 95 of the Prisons Act.
Police yesterday warned that he may be in possession of screwdrivers and a knife.
Gibbs may have stolen a white Toyota LandCruiser, registration 1CJT748, which has not been recovered.
The Department of Corrective Services would not discuss the circumstances behind the escape for security reasons.
The escape is the second involving a minimum security inmate this month.
On December 11, convicted burglar Brett Shannon Klimczak stole a prison vehicle modified to fight bushfires at Wooroloo Prison Farm.
Klimczak drove the vehicle through a perimeter fence and has not been seen since.
Police across WA's South West were yesterday on the lookout for Gibbs, who may be heading to Rockingham and Mandurah.
He is described as 192cm tall, weighing 83kg and of medium build with a fair complexion.
He has brown hair and green-brown eyes and tattoos of a spider and Chinese writing on his forearms.
Anyone who spots Gibbs is urged not to approach him and contact police on 131 444.
