Albany named WA’s tidiest town
Albany is WA’s tidiest town.
The announcement was made this afternoon by Environment Minister Albert Jacob at an awards ceremony in Perth.
Albany was chosen as the 2015 Tidy Towns overall winner for its success in staging Anzac centenary events and its improvements in waste management.
Judges commented the Anzac Centenary commemoration, held last November to remember the first fleet of Anzac troops which sailed from Albany for war and attracted 40,000 people, was one of the most significant, game changing projects seen in the Tidy Towns program.
“There were high expectations on Albany’s efforts to commemorate this important anniversary and the whole community rose to the challenge,” Mr Jacob said.
“There was a community-wide 2500-person volunteering effort to deliver entertainment, accommodation, food and general hospitality to visiting dignitaries and tourists.”
Albany was also the winner of the Tidy Towns Heritage and Culture cetgory.
This year was the 46th year of the Keep Australia Beautiful Western Australian Tidy Towns awards.
