Albany-Bayswater A bounced back from a disappointing draw last week to take three crucial points over Royals in round 10 of the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s open competition on Sunday afternoon at the North Road soccer grounds.

After drawing with PR United last weekend, the third-placed Albany-Bayswater chalked up their fifth win of 2016 with a comfortable 6-3 win at the final whistle.

In a fast-flowing first half, both sides were able to find space inside the area and score goals, going into half-time locked together at 3-3.

However, after an early goal in the second 45 minutes, Albany-Bayswater got on top through the midfield as they went on to record a solid result.

Asgher Nawroozi starred for the winners to net a hat-trick while captain Cain Pietropaolo, Andrew Oboh and Kwa Si Say also slotted goals home.

Nathan Griffiths scored all three of Royals’ goals, which came in the opening half.

On Saturday night, league leaders Phoenix continued their unbeaten season thus far, prevailing 3-0 over Polonia to clinch a ninth straight win.

Rovers prevailed 3-2 over PR United in their rescheduled match on Tuesday night.

In the men’s masters competition last Tuesday night, The Vets closed the gap to top side Denmark after scoring a 3-0 win over Albany-Bayswater B.

The result leaves The Vets just two points adrift of Denmark after 10 rounds, while Old Boys thrashed Cross Keys United 5-0, with Danny Burkett scoring twice.

Meanwhile in the women’s league A competition, only five points separate Denmark and Phoenix in the standings after both were victorious last Friday night.

Rovers almost pulled off their third straight win, pushing Phoenix for most of their clash, but a strike from Renee van der Veen was the difference in the 1-0 result.

Denmark sisters Dayna and Liah Cassidy-Smith combined for three goals as their side defeated Caledonians, 4-1, and in the other round 11 match, Polonia came from a goal down at half-time to draw with Royals, 2-2.

Winners in the women’s league B competition were Mt Barker United 10-0 over Rovers, Grammar Blue downed Grammar Red, 4-2, Denmark White trounced Polonia Red 11-0, and Royals were no match for Denmark Black, losing 6-0.
