Albany Regional Airport is set to introduced paid parking from January 1.

Parking will be free for the first four hours after that a fee of $8.80 will be charged, the City of Albany revealed today.

Deputy Mayor Greg Stocks said the airport was an expensive asset to maintain and the fees would combat the growing number of cars being parked at the airport long-term.

“With the current free parking and no parking limitations it is placing pressure on the availability of public parking spaces and often forces some travellers to park their vehicles on grass verges,” he said.

“Paid parking will dampen demand and allow better management of the public parking areas while avoiding the need to undertake significant additional capital cost to expand public parking infrastructure.”

The parking metres are being installed this week.

Mr Stocks said the parking fees are aimed at the passengers who are parking their vehicle free for more than one day.

“Implementing paid parking at the airport is aimed at capturing the current air traveller who is parking their vehicle free of cost for more than one day, ranging from a day user travelling to Perth to the extended air traveller such as the current FIFO workers that may park their vehicles free of cost for up to two weeks,” he said.
