Adams trades batting gloves for boxing gloves
Albany boxer Luke Adams has needed little time to settle into his new sport, claiming his maiden State title after just his second fight in Perth at the weekend.
After months of intense training in Albany, Adams stepped into the ring for the first time last Saturday at the Boxing WA State Novice and Intermediate Titles.
Competing in the 91kg senior male novice class Adams won his opening bout on Saturday by technical knockout in the first round and then progressed to the title decider on Sunday.
He won Sunday’s final on points after it went the full three two-minute rounds, making the 20-year-old the 91kg senior male novice State champion.
Having only recently taken up boxing, Adams was eager to keep improving and compete in more fights.
“I’ve always like boxing, I’ve watched it and always wanted to get into it,” he said.
“I have been training every day, lots of running and pad work but it was a really tough fight.
“I loved it, winning this now I want to move on and go as far as I can with it.”
Adams represented Southcity which is home to Peterson’s Gym and head trainer Geoff Peterson, and has been training with coach Craig Golding in Albany.
“I’m feeling really good at the moment,” Adams said.
“I weigh in at about 90kg.
“Big thanks to Craig who has been training me, we have gone hard the last few months.”
Adams, who also plays A-grade cricket for North County, said he was now focussing on boxing and was hopeful of another fight in the next few months.
