$6.9m boost for Centennial junior footy

The completion of the junior AFL section of the Centennial Park Sporting and Event Precinct will be the final peg in the $42 million project.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Mick Murray announced the final $6.922 million election commitment for the project when he visited the site on Tuesday.

With the Stage 2 project set to be complete by October 2019, the funding enables the completion of the junior AFL section, field improvements, improved lighting and drainage.

Mr Murray said the new facility would be vital in maintaining regional sport and ensuring an active community. “Centennial Park will be a superb facility for the Albany community, and will bring new opportunities for the community to get active and play sport,” he said.

“If we don’t ... (the) kids that get into trouble, 70 per cent of those kids have never played organised sports, so if we can get them into organised sports, they’ll drop crime rates down.

“And not even the crime part but also the physical part of life ... we want people to come here, utilise the facilities and do their exercise.”

City of Albany has costed its overall master plan for Centennial Park at $42 million.
