Country Championships: Perfect blend of youth and experience key to promotion, according to coach Chris Walker

Ongerup Football Association are bracing for an improved Nutrien Ag Solutions Country Football Championships this week when they return to division two, according to coach Chris Walker. The OFA experienced a rough campaign in division one last year, failing to register a win before being relegated to division two for the 2024 tournament. However, bolstered by the enormous inclusion of former Geelong-listed player Timm House who will be captain, Walker said his side has a good blend of youth and experience in their push for promotion. “We have a bit of experience and a bit of youth and it’s a good mix so hopefully they can all gel, showcase their talents and come away with some wins,” he said. “They’re only short games so you’ve got to be ready to go. “We have plenty of experience though in the squad like Luke Bairstow, but Timm (House) will be captain.” Despite being relegated last year, Walker insisted the lower division is a good chance for his side to harbour their ambitions. “I don’t want to set the bar too high but we’re going there to win it, I don’t know if there is a pass mark but that’s our ambition,” Walker said. “I think (we’re good enough to win), we won this grade a couple of years ago . . . so the feeling is we can give it a good crack again this year. “(Last year) was a good learning experience for all involved . . . we have a pretty strong squad and everyone that’s in it deserves to be there.” Walker said 2023 Lez Ganzer medallist Jayden Brooks will ruck but with the help of numerous other players to share the load. Former Katanning Wanderers premiership key forward and the league’s leading goal-kicker Caleb Keley will form a dynamic forward line with fellow spearhead and 2023 leading goal-kicker Jackson Callope and the crafty Arron Russell. Dean Rintoul, Alex Baum and Harris Reagan will provide invaluable experience to the youthful flavour the team boasts including Boxwood Hill young gun Hayden Richter and Gnowangerup’s Mac Crichton. Unsurprisingly, the undefeated Bulldogs are the highest represented team with 10 players selected while reigning premiers Newdegate have seven players. Despite their strong squad, they must contend with the glaring absentees of stars Fraser House, Nick Bertola, Reagan Smith, and Lachlan Maples. Their campaign begins on Friday at Revo Fitness Stadium against Mortlock at 10am followed by Central Midlands Coastal at 2pm. On Saturday they lock horns with Great Northern at 2pm at Pentanet Stadium before facing Eastern Districts at 5pm.
