Lions on the board after notching gritty win over Boxwood Hill

Newdegate registered their first win of the 2021 Ongerup Football Association season after defeating Boxwood Hill at home in round two on Saturday.

The Lions were narrow losers in the opening round to Lake Grace-Pingrup but bounced back in a tight contest with Boxwood.

Chris Wollaston was on fire up forward and finished with four majors and he was well supported by Arron Russell as the home side prevailed by 13 points at the final siren.

Youngster Matt Dykes impressed in his return to the Lions while Sean Marshall also won plenty of the ball in the 11.8 (74) to 9.7 (61) result. Veteran Matt Campbell was a standout for Boxwood in the loss while Edward Moir and Nic Bertola were also valuable contributors.

Jack Davis booted three majors to finish as Boxwood’s major avenue to goal.

Gnowangerup ran out massive round two winners against Jerramungup as Timm House and Lewis Davis starred.

House bagged 11 goals in a dazzling display while Davis, who last year won the Leo Graham Medal as the best player in the Upper Great Southern Football League, was just as damaging with nine majors of his own.

The pair combined for 20 goals as their side thrashed the Eagles by 188 points at Jerramungup.

Scott Anderson and James Dewar were also named in the best players for the Bulldogs as they kicked nine goals to nil in the first term and by half time led by 86 points.

The Bulldogs kicked nine majors in the third and fourth quarters to score more than 200 points in the demolition.

It was a second straight win to start the new campaign for the reigning premiers as they won 31.19 (205) to 2.5 (17).

Wade Brown and Harrison Brown were the two goal kickers for the Eagles while Andy Solomon and Michael Lester also toiled hard in the heavy defeat.
