The Stirling Range will play host to the “world’s fastest-growing” cycling discipline at a brand new event this Saturday.

The first Wild Gravel Cycling and Running event will involve four cycling and three running courses through the Stirling Range National Park.

Gravel cycling, according to Wild Gravel project manager Rory Murray, is the perfect balance between mountain biking and road racing.

“There are multiple facets to (gravel cycling’s) appeal as it is a bit safer and more relaxing than mountain biking, and with nicer scenery and again safer, than road cycling,” he said.

“It’s a good mix for cyclists from both communities.

“These groups who are usually separate can come meet in the middle for gravel cycling.”

Cyclists can compete in a 125km, 90km, 50km or 21km cycle through the park, with runners choosing between a 21km, 12km and 5km run, each track offering stunning views of the Stirling Range and Red Gum Pass.

The event follows the growing success of similar events across the state, including Seven in Nannup and Backroads Gravel in the Midwest.

“In the past 10 years it has just blown up completely,” Mr Murray said.

“Gravel cycling is the fastest growing genre of cycling around the world, and we are thrilled to bring this exciting, new event to WA in the lead-up to the 2026 World Gravel Cycling Championships.

“There wasn’t really a full calendar of it and now there is almost an entire season with our event.

“The Stirling Ranges are a spectacular location, and we know this event will offer an unforgettable experience for all participants.”

An afterparty will be held at Mt Trio Bush Camp and Caravan Park.
