The City of Greater Geraldton has urged dog owners to maintain responsibilities for their pets, after the number of dog attacks increased in the area.

In 2024, 211 attacks were reported to the city, 10 more than the previous year.

It continues a growing trend in Geraldton of dog attacks, with 184 reports coming in 2022.

As of last week, the city had received six reports in the first three weeks of 2025.

Mayor Jerry Clune said dog owners must be aware of what they needed to do to help the community.

“The city reminds dog owners of their responsibilities to ensure the safety of the community,” he said.

“Dog owners must ensure their animals are registered, in a properly secured yard and not left to wander — in order to protect not only the safety of people but other animals alike.

“In addition to this, the Dog Act 1976 stipulates the legal responsibility owners have in keeping their dog under control whilst leashed.”

Dog attacks can include a number of different stipulations, including behaving in a manner to cause a reasonable person to fear physical injury, aggressively rushing towards a victim, an attempt to attack, tearing clothing, biting, and any physical injuries.

The city has a number of approved leash-free areas and beaches, which can be accessed online through the city website.
