Chapman Valley Primary School to fundraise at Yellowfields concert for playground upgrade to help student

All young Dylan Readett wants to be able to do is play with his friends, just like he’s always done. That has not been possible since the seven-year-old was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy last year, and faces life in a wheelchair. But his primary school is determined to help grant this brave little legend’s simple wish and give him the gift of play. Amid all the excitement about this weekend’s Yellowfields concert, Dylan’s Chapman Valley Primary School is hoping to tap into the community harmony to help make his wish a reality. The school will be fundraising at the inaugural music festival at Nabawa Oval on Saturday, collecting donations to go towards a much-needed playground upgrade, so Dylan can rejoin his mates. “Our playground should be a place for every child to have fun together. But Dylan’s wheelchair can’t handle the sand, so we’re raising funds to replace it with rubber softfall, making it accessible and inclusive,” Chapman Valley Primary School principal Renae Hough said. “At Chapman Valley Primary School, we strive to provide for every child’s unique individual needs, no matter what they are.” Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder that leads to muscle degeneration and weakness. The condition affects approximately one in 3500 male births worldwide. Dylan’s mum Caitlin Readett said a revamped school playground would have a massive impact on her son’s quality of life. “Knowing my son can play outside with his mates without getting his wheelchair bogged in the sand means a lot,” she added. “To have him feel included and, as he puts it, ‘To make me feel more a part of everything,’ is very important.” Yellowfields is on this Saturday, featuring an impressive lineup including Shannon Noll, Adam Brand, Beccy Cole, James Blundell, Matt Cornell, Adrian Eagle, and Dylan Wright.
