The bushfire warning south of Geraldton has been downgraded to a watch and act, as firefighters continue to fight the blaze.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued a bushfire emergency warning on Thursday afternoon for those in an area north of Walkaway-Nangetty Road, south of Minnenooka Road and west of Philpot Road covering parts of Walkaway, Minnenooka and Ellendale.

However, just after 4.30pm, the warning had been downgraded.

DFES said the fire was moving in a south-easterly direction and was not contained or controlled.

About 80 firefighters are on the scene and are actively fighting the blaze, with the local government, SES volunteers, and farmers also lending a hand to assist.

The fire was reported to authorities just after 11am on Thursday.
