A desperate search is underway after a man was attacked by a crocodile in the waters of Far North Queensland.

Queensland Police confirmed an operation was underway at the Annan River Bridge near Cooktown after the attack was reported just after 2pm on Saturday.

A police spokeswoman said the man entered the water but failed to resurface.

In a tweet, Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said paramedics and emergency services had been deployed to the scene searching for the man.
