Snapshot of Qld's toolbox murders case
WHO
* The bodies of drug dealers Cory Breton, 28, and Iuliana Triscaru, 31, were found in a toolbox submerged in a lagoon south of Brisbane more than two weeks after being killed on January 24, 2016
* Eight people - seven men and one woman - were charged and convicted over the murders in four separate hearings
* Stou Daniels, Davy Malu Taiao, Trent Michael Thrupp and Tuhirangi-Thomas Tahiata were found guilty of murder and torture
* Waylon Ngaketo Cowan Walker, Webbstar Latu, Tepuna Tupuna Mariri and Ngatokoona Mareiti guilty of manslaughter
* All involved were dealers or users of illegal drugs.
ARRESTS:
* February 11, 2016: Daniels, Taiao, Thrupp, Tahiata, Latu and Mareiti are charged with the murders
* February 16, 2016: Kingston man Mariri becomes the seventh person charged
* September 1, 2017: Walker extradited from New Zealand becomes the eighth person charged
* WHO DID WHAT:
* Mareiti, a mother of seven, helped clean a Brisbane unit and heard the pair screaming from inside the toolbox and failed to call for help
* Tahiata helped carry the toolbox to a utility and dump it in the lagoon
* Mariri helped torture the pair and force them into the toolbox that he sat on to stop them from escaping.
* Latu loaded the toolbox on the utility and helped clean the crime scene
* Walker was aware the pair had been detained but did not participate in the murders
* Daniels, Taiao, Thrupp and Tahiata were found responsible for murder and torture.
TRIAL
* The prosecution said Daniels was the ringleader who became paranoid after learning of a photograph and feared he was being set up. The victims were lured to a Kingston unit, tortured, assaulted and bound and shut in the toolbox submerged in the Scrubby Creek Lagoon
* The defence said key witnesses in the crown case had mental health issues with a history of drug and alcohol abuse and should not be considered reliable.
JUDGMENT
* Justice David Boddice said the "dreadful" acts of psychological torture were "unspeakable evil of the worst kind" showing a complete lack of humanity.
SENTENCES
* Daniels, Thrupp, Taiao and Tahiata sentenced to life - all must serve 30 years.
* Walker and Latu 12 years, Mariri 13 years and Mareiti nine years.
