Cloverdale incident: Good Samaritans end up being rammed by car after stopping to help injured couple

Good Samaritans attempting to help two pedestrians who just had been run down in a suspected hit and run were themselves then terrorised by another man after he mistook them as being involved in the incident. A 46-year-old man and 47-year-old woman were confronted by another 46-year-old man driving a black MG station sedan about 11.30pm Friday while they were walking on Sydenham Street in Cloverdale. The man driving the MG, who is known to the woman, allegedly mounted the kerb and knocked the pair down before fleeing the scene. They both suffered serious ankle injuries. A man, 32, and a woman, 45, in a SsangYong Rexton stopped to help the injured couple. They also had a small child in the back of their car. Minutes later, a third man aged 30 arrived at the scene, who was also known to the injured woman, arrived at the scene after he was told about the incident. Mistaking the good Samaritans who had stopped to help as being involved in the suspected hit and run, he got out of his car and confronted them. The fearful couple got back into their car and tried to leave, but the 30-year-old man gave chase and followed them. He allegedly rammed the Rexton several times as he pursued them through the streets of Cloverdale, Belmont and Redcliffe, before eventually stopping on Hardey Road, Belmont. Police arrived shortly after and arrested the 30-year-old Belmont man. He has since been charged with one count each of reckless driving and exceeding 0.08g alcohol per 100ml of blood and will face Perth Magistrates Court on January 20. The 46-year-old Redcliffe man from the initial incident was also arrested and charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm and one count of failing to report an incident occasioning bodily harm. He will appear before Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday. The injured man and woman were sent to Royal Perth Hospital via ambulance for treatment of their injuries. Cannington detectives are continuing their investigation and may press further charges.
