The first Albany service commemorating and honouring personnel who have served in the defence forces in the last 50 years was well received on Sunday.

The service, organised by the Albany RSL sub-branch, was a chance to recognise the ongoing contributions of defence force younger veterans who have served in various capacities since 1973.

Hundreds attended Sunday’s service at the South East Memorial in the Forts precinct, including many visitors to Albany.

The service followed a similar format to the RSL’s more established services with Rev Canon Karven Cave leading those gathered in prayer before a letter reading by RSL member Paul Hines.

Wreathes were laid at the base of the memorial before Steve Edmonds read the ode ahead of the last post and a minute’s silence.

Albany RSL president Rex Hendrix, who came up with the idea to hold the service, delivered the keynote address.

After the formalities, many people relocated to the RSL on Stirling Terrace for light refreshments and a medal presentation to Nigel Hall.
