Young Southern Edge Arts performers to put on a theatre show featuring fire and aerialists
Southern Edge Arts will host their first performance of the year since the onset of COVID-19 — a free outdoor show featuring aerial arts, theatre and fire spinning.
Created by young performers at Southern Edge Arts, Elemental will follow the antics of a group of teenagers living on Mars, who fly to Earth to find a world where the elements are in disharmony.
With the help of Sir Lawrence, The Critic and the Stage Manager, the young Martians learn about the fight between water and fire, the essential flow of water and how life can grow when water and earth mix.
Trapeze, silk and lycra artists will present their interpretation of the four elements, with actors providing some laughs as they try to bring the elements back into harmony.
Artistic director Anne Sorenson said the company was excited to be in action.
“Being in lockdown, we felt quite devastated by not being able to do performance,” she said.
“The arts sector was really hit hard by it all so we thought this was a great opportunity to remind people of the importance of the arts and how it brings people together.”
She said live performance could not be replaced.
“There’s a real difference to watching people do performance live,” she said.
“When you watch the young people hanging 5m in air above you it’s a little bit more dramatic.”
“To watch and be present during live performance ... it’s something special that can’t be replaced.”
Elemental will start at 7pm on Saturday at Eyre Park.
