With less than a month to go before filming starts in the Great Southern, Perth-based production company The Penguin Empire is hoping Albany locals will answer the casting call for extras in their zombie-thriller, We Bury the Dead.

The movie, starring British actor Daisy Ridley and directed by WA’s Zak Hilditch, will bring about 100 cast and crew to Albany for filming which is set to start on February 19.

Some crew members, including producer Grant Sputore, arrived in Albany some weeks ago to scout shooting locations.

Sputore said there was still “more than we’d like” left to do, but he was confident it would all get done in time.

“We’re still casting some smaller roles that we’re hoping we can find in Albany, and there’s a lot of work under way with councils and local businesses to help secure key locations,” he said.

“But we’re confident we’ll have everything sorted by the time the cameras are scheduled to start rolling.”

In many ways our film is a road movie, so we’re looking for a diverse array of landscapes, from urban environments to beautiful scenic vistas. Fortunately, Albany offers everything we could dream of.

Sputore said several Albany actors were cast as zombies after a November call-out for extras.

“There are a handful of Albany locals already working on the film and we’re always hoping for more to get involved,” he said.

“The big thing we’ll be hoping for is Albany locals who are interested in being extras.

“It’s a chance for people to literally be in the film.”

State government funding helped secure Albany and the wider Great Southern as the backdrop for the film, described as a survival thriller set in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment.

Sputore said the intention was to shoot the entire film in the region.

“In many ways our film is a road movie so we’re looking for a diverse array of landscapes, from urban environments to beautiful scenic vistas,” he said.

“Fortunately, Albany offers everything we could dream of.”
