Women’s country team packed with LGSHA talent

The 2019 Hockey WA Women’s Country Team, announced last Tuesday following the recent Women’s Country Hockey Championships in Perth, is stacked with Lower Great Southern Hockey Association representation.

Five LGSHA players have been named in the final travelling squad of 18, while former player Georgie Powis will continue as team manager of the WA side.

Both the goalkeepers in the squad are from the LGSHA, with Bonnie Crook (Vikings) and Ashlyn Gardner (Mt Barker) set to share duties on the last line.

Mt Barker star Laura Archer will return to the State line-up, having played at the national carnival in 2017. LGSHA youngsters Cate McDonald (North Albany) and Charlotte Edwards (Manypeaks) will make their debuts for the team.

Gardner has been to the nationals previously, while Crook will make her first appearance at the tournament.

Lorissa Ferrell, who plays for Vikings in the LGSHA, has been named as one of six train-on players in the team who may be called on in the event of another squad member being injured or having to withdraw.

The WA side will travel to Shepparton, Victoria for the annual championships, which run from August 3-11.

WA finished fifth last year, with no playing representatives from the LGSHA in the team, but Powis travelled with the outfit as the team manager.
