West Coast Eagles football manager Craig Vozzo believes a call on whether Albany star Jeremy McGovern will play against Port Adelaide this week will be left until the last minute, after avoiding a serious ankle injury.

McGovern was involved in a marking contest in an organised match simulation when he landed awkwardly and immediately clutched for his ankle in pain, limping from the ground.

The Eagles vice-captain was allowed to play in the session against Brisbane while serving his one-game striking suspension because it was not an AFL-sanctioned practice game.

Vozzo confirmed on TAB Radio yesterday morning that McGovern’s scan results were pleasing.

“It ended up being a reasonable result on the scan,” Vozzo said.

“We were all holding our breath but it ended up being the plain vanilla, old-fashioned roll of the ankle where you strain ligaments.

“Not the syndesmosis that has plagued us over the last couple of years.”

Vozzo said McGovern would be touch and go for this weekend’s crucial clash as the Eagles look to post their first win in the Gold Coast hub.

“That will get back to how quickly the swelling goes down, he’s weight-bearing quite well now and how much training he can get in before the Port Adelaide game,” he said.

“I think it will be a late call, later in the week would be my guess but the early signs are good.”

Hear from the man himself in Thursday’s edition of Jezza’s Journal from the inner sanctum of the hub.
