WA Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages shares most popular baby names in Great Southern/South West 2024

The most popular baby names in the Great Southern and South West for 2024 have now been revealed, listing the top eight picks for boys and girls born last year. The WA Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has released its list counting 2024’s most popular names, with Noah topping the boys chart and Mia the girls for the South West/Great Southern. The list, which comprises 23 boys names and 32 girls names, contains a variety of choices with classics such as Grace and Georgia appearing alongside the more modern picks of Luna and Lyla. WA Births Deaths and Marriages registrar Alison Jackson said the list of most popular baby names is a hot topic every year, with each region reflecting its own trends. “For instance, in the Goldfields-Esperance region, Ethan and Harper were number one, Mia was most popular girls name in the South West/Great Southern and Levi topped boys names in Peel,” she said. Albany couple Acacia Green and Matt France were one of many Great Southern parents whose newborn nabbed one of the top names of 2024. The new parents, who welcomed baby Archie in November last year, said they hadn’t realised their choice would be so popular. “My partner was looking through the names on the rookie draft list and (Archie) was one we liked,” Ms Green confessed. “We liked it and didn’t know any other people called Archie or any friends who had called their baby that. “It shocked me when I found out it was a top name as I didn’t know any other Archies. “It doesn’t really bother me though, we still really like it.” The Great Southern and South West follow the trends of greater WA in boys names, with Noah topping the State’s list alongside Oliver, but differs in the girls category, with the State’s favourite names of Isla and Charlotte absent from the regions’ top eight rankings. There were 30,825 births registered in WA in 2024.
