WA cycling star Craig Wiggins, 22, seriously injured in ‘attempted murder’ road rampage on Sunshine Coast

Albany cycling star Craig Wiggins has been seriously injured in an alleged road rampage in Queensland that has left a motorist facing an attempted murder charge. Police will allege Wiggins, 22, was riding near Woombye on the Sunshine Coast about 11am last Thursday when a 23-year-old male driver deliberately swerved into him. The Albany man sustained serious head injuries and was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Police say the alleged driver — Noosaville man Kyle John Heaney — fled the scene in his silver sedan. Queensland Police released a statement the next day outlining the allegations against the 23-year-old motorist. They will allege that Wiggins was the second cyclist the man deliberately hit with his vehicle in a half hour period. The driver allegedly rammed a car at traffic lights about 10.30am before deliberately driving into a 20-year-old cyclist at 10.45am, leaving him with “deep grazing”. Police allege that after ramming his vehicle into Wiggins about 11am, the motorist eventually crashed into a fence then waded into a dam before his arrest. Mr Heaney has been charged with one count of attempted murder in relation to the incident involving Wiggins. He has also been charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle, one count of obstruct police and one count of driver fail to remain at an incident and render assistance. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in court in December. Speaking to ABC Sunshine Coast, Acting Det. Sen-Sgt Craig Mansfield said the crash scenes were “pretty traumatic” for witnesses. “Particularly, the second cyclist who was said to be thrown into the air quite some distance,” he said. Wiggins — an Australian Cycling Academy member who has won international road races and Australian titles — moved to Queensland late last year to further his cycling career. His mother, Lourdes, has flown to Queensland to be with him. His father Randall, said his son had been on a training ride on Thursday when he was struck by the car. He said his son had serious facial injuries but had been up on his feet and was able to walk. A multiple Albany Sportsperson of the Year, Wiggins is expected to be transferred to Brisbane this weekend for further treatment.
