Vets seek homes for cats

Mt Barker Veterinary Hospital is asking potential cat owners to consider their kitten rehoming program before buying a new feline.

The program, which was established in early 2009, is run solely by the organisation with the help of foster carers, according to MBVH’s Melanie Greeney.

“All equipment and healthcare services are provided by our nurses and veterinarians,” she said

“The time for caring for the kittens is allocated both within our normal working hours, and donated on weekends.”

Ms Greeney said the adoption fee charged went back to the program.

“We are very passionate about our kitten rehoming program, which operates as a not-for-profit project,” she said. “Each rehomed feline has an adoption fee, which is invested back into the program to contribute to the raw cost of caring for these animals.

“The adoption fees are only a fraction of the real costs and extensive labour needed to run such a program.”

Ms Greeney said all donations to the program were welcome.

“Despite the increasing awareness of the importance of sterilisation and responsible feline ownership, hundreds of cats and kittens each year around Australia are euthanised for want of a loving home,” she said. “So if you are looking for a kitten, or two, or an adult cat, please rescue, don’t buy.”
