Trainer Grant Williams chasing cups double with Sugar Cain who is among leading contenders in Albany Cup
Geraldton Cup winner Sugar Cain will be one of the fancied runners in the $100,000 Wellington & Reeves Albany Cup (2100m) on Sunday.
A strong field is assembled for Albany’s major staying feature of the season and Sugar Cain will be the runner for leading metropolitan trainer Grant Williams.
Sugar Cain finished powerfully last Sunday to win the $100,000 Geraldton Cup (2100m) by a half-length over Off Wego and jockey Patrick Carbery will retain the ride for this week’s assignment.
The seven-year-old rises 0.5kg in weight and is drawn awkwardly in barrier 11 but opened up at $4.80 with TABtouch as the second favourite in the cup.
Leading WA trainer Adam Durrant will look to continue his great success in the race, with progressive galloper Tena Koutou engaged but the four-year-old also has a wide gate to content with.
Tena Koutou opened as a $4.20 favourite when prices came out on Thursday and will jump from gate 13 with Clint Johnston-Porter in the saddle.
Apprentice Holly Watson will be aboard Superior Smile for co-trainers Ben and Dan Pearce.
Overthought ran a strong second in last Thursday’s Narrogin Cup and will back up in the Albany Cup for trainer Fenella Martin and apprentice Keshaw Dhurun.
Last year’s Albany Cup was won by Marocchino for trainer Lou Luciani and star jockey William Pike.
A final field of 14 will contest the cup which will be the feature on the nine-race card at Percy Spencer Racecourse.
The meeting starts at 12.12pm with the cup set down for 4.40pm.
Albany Racing Club will also hold a Calcutta for the Albany Cup on Saturday from 6-8.30pm at the race club.
Tickets are available to purchase by calling 9841 4000.
