Town’s last video store to close

Albany's only remaining video store will cease renting movies at the end of this week, the shop has confirmed.

Albany Mega Movies will end its 29-year run of movie renting in town on Sunday, ahead of a stock clearance next month.

The store will close for good on August 2.

"We apologise to all our customers as this decision was not easy," the store said in a Facebook post.

"Due to the nature of the business and ever increasing uptake of digital services we can no longer continue trading on a viable basis."

The shop has been in town for 29 years, and owned by the current operator for 24 years.

In March Albany Advertiser highlighted the shop's longstanding place in the community, where prices had not changed since the turn of the century.

Owner Brett Mosel said the rise of fast internet and online streaming services had hit his industry.

"With the introduction of NBN being seen to ramp up in Albany over the past 18 months, we have seen a dramatic decrease in business as the town has come online," he said in March.

"Online buying and streaming is now greatly affecting not only our store but other long-term businesses in this city, as seen by the growing number of shops closing over the past 18 months."
