Timely flag for Gnowangerup

Gnowangerup celebrated their centenary in style after coming from behind to deny Boxwood Hill by 15 points in a thrilling Ongerup Football Association grand final at Borden last Saturday.

The Bulldogs trailed by four goals midway through the third term but stormed home to overrun the Bombers in the final quarter to claim their second premiership in three seasons, 13.8 (86) to 10.11 (71).

Searching for their first flag under coach Alan Smallwood since their historic run of five straight premierships from 2002-2006, the Bombers led by 13 points at half- time after both sides could not be separated at quarter-time.

But the Bulldogs produced a sterling eight-goals-to-three second half in front of a bumper crowd at the neutral venue.

Youngster Jayden Scott was recognised with best-on-ground honours in the Bulldogs’ win along with solid contributions from Damien Stewart, Tyler Caldwell and Jedd Herbert, while Craig Bolton Jr booted three goals.

Ganzer medallist Issac Baum, Robbie Lee, Mick Swarbrick and Rohan Vaux were the Bombers’ best in a gallant defeat.
