Strong representation from Albany Netball Association at Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships in Perth

Nine teams from the Albany Netball Association competed at the Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships in Perth on the WA Day long weekend, the biggest community netball event in the State.

This year more than 3500 players, coaches and umpires from 41 associations across WA participated in 39 divisions catering for 274 teams from under-12s through to masters at the Gold Netball Centre and Perth Netball Association.

Devon Proudfoot, an Albany umpire, was selected to read the official oath at the opening ceremony and Maggie Hardiman and Daisy Stewart-Morgan represented Albany as flag bearers in the opening ceremony.

There was great competition and wonderful sportsmanship, highlighted by the growing level of skill coming through in junior and senior ranks.

The biggest contingent of players from the ANA took part in this year’s championships and returned strong results.

Albany’s under-12 team, competing for the first time, faced some tough competition in division one and came away with one win and a draw.

There were two ANA teams in the under-13 age group, in division two and six.

The 13s first team had some close games, which included a draw against Southern Districts, and the 13s second team were evenly matched coming away with four draws.

They missed the final on percentage after finishing their last game with a draw.

In the under-14 age group Albany had teams in division two and four and both teams finished in sixth position on the ladder.

Albany had two teams in the under-16s, competing in division three and six.

The first team finished with one win in division three while the second Albany side performed well in division six with three wins to claim third place.

Albany’s under-20 team were in division two and walked away with two wins and fifth place overall.

The ANA open team finished in fourth place of the division-one standings after recording one win, three losses and a draw.

Albany lost their first open game 10-32 against Peel Football Netball and then went down by 11 goals to Perth.

They responded to notch a 21-20 victory over Wanneroo Districts before falling to Southern Districts by 28 goals.

In their final qualifying game, Albany drew 18-all with Eaton.

Albany lost by five goals to Perth in their first finals game and were then defeated by Eaton, 15-21, in their second finals match on Monday.
