Individual riders and teams are being challenged to put their legs to the test later this month at a 24-hour Spinathon to raise $24,000 for the Albany Community Hospice.

Starting at midday on February 19 at Haz Beanz at the Albany Waterfront Marina, riders of all ages including Edith Wilkinson, 7, and BJ Coleman, 15, will take turns riding stationary bikes into the night and the next morning with the goal of raising $1000 an hour.

All money raised will support the work of the award-winning Albany Community Hospice which provides palliative care to people of the Great Southern at no cost to the patient or family.

Individual riders can have a crack at the entire 24-hours or can take on the challenge as a team.

Food and raffle tickets will be on sale on the day and everyone is encouraged to head down to the Albany Marina and cheer on the fundraisers.

Last year’s Spinathon raised more than $13,000.

Albany Community Hospice fundraising committee chair Jeanann Barbour said volunteers could ride for as long or as little as they liked.

“We are encouraging everyone in the Albany community to get involved — either through riding a bike individually, or in a team — and you don’t have to do the full 24 hours,” she said.

“We’re very much looking forward to some friendly competition between the fundraisers —I know there will be a few teams wanting to out-do each other.”
