Southern Zone were big winners at the annual men’s Inter Zone Round Robin in Dongara earlier this month, claiming the title after a thrilling final-round clash against Northern Zone.

Four zones were represented at the annual carnival held on February 4-5 at the Denison Bowling Club with South Western, Southern Zone, Northern Zone and Eastern Zone all taking part.

Despite Southern and South Western recording two wins apiece at the conclusion of the tournament, Southern were title winners due to a higher number of overall rink wins, 9-7.

Heading into the last round on the Sunday morning all zones had one win each.

Northern Zone and Southern Zone were on top of the ladder with six rink wins each, while South Western and Eastern had tallied four rink wins.

With the accumulation of rink wins in previous rounds, Southern Zone and Northern Zone were both in pole position to claim title honours with the two ladder leaders facing each other for the overall trophy in the third and final round.

Southern started in brilliant fashion but Northern were never far away and by the halfway mark the two sides were exchanging leads on the aggregate board.

Southern eventually took a match-winning lead in the last few ends.

When the dust settled, Southern took the aggregate 98-94 along with their three rink wins and had claimed the overall title with two wins along with nine overall rink wins.

Johnathon Davidson, Richard Schinzig, Richard Plant and Dean Offer were instrumental in Southern’s final-round triumph.

Meanwhile, South Western charged home late in their final round clash against Eastern Zone to claim a come-from-behind 93-87 aggregate win, cementing a runner-up spot in the process.

Northern finished in third place with one win and two losses along with eight rink wins while Eastern had one win with six overall rink wins.

In round one on Saturday, Southern Zone were defeated by South Western Zone 97 shots to 79 before defeating Eastern Zone 111-81 in the round two match.
