Local signwriter Dion Hounsfield has been crowned the WA regional World Skills signage champion, after he won gold at the competition in Perth last month.

Mr Hounsfield, who recently finished his apprenticeship at Eyerite Signs, will now head to national championships early next year.

He scored 97.5 out of a possible 100.

With seven categories making up the total, the Albany man received maximum scores in five categories.

Mr Hounsfield said he was pleased with the result.

“It was a great feeling to win gold,” he said.

He said he enjoyed signwriting because he did “something different everyday”.

“You get to see your work around town. Knowing that you did a good job of it gives you a lot confidence,” he said.

His colleague at Eyerite Signs, third-year apprentice Mitch Perrella , also competed in the World Skills competition.He finishedwas runner-up to Hounsfield with a score 88.5.

“Dion is a year and a half ahead of me so to finish runner-up to him was a great achievement,” Mr Perrella said.

“Everyone that competed up there was around my stage, so to finish top of my class was something I’m happy about”.

The duo will be presented with their medals at Crown Perth on November 22.
