Scotty’s Shot: Emu Point Red continue strong form in title defence of men’s first division pennant

Passionate Albany bowler TIM SCOTT is writing a fortnightly column for The Extra, keeping our readers up-to-date with the local bowls scene.

There is a logjam at the top of the ladder after round nine in ladies first division in the Lower Great Southern Bowling League with three teams within one point of the lead.

Emu Point Purple currently occupy the top spot after their dominant 28-shot win over Albany Green 4 (53) to 0 (25) as Albany Gold had a surprise away win over Denmark Aqua 3 (51) to 1 (39).

Mt Barker Golf’s puzzling season continued with a 3 (45) to 1 (39) loss to Emu Point Red whilst Middleton Beach Green upset local rivals Middleton Beach White 4 (54) to 0 (24).

Cranbrook opened a handy lead at the top of ladies second division after their victory over Mt Barker Golf 4 (50) to 0 (38) as Emu Point Blue completely dominated Middleton Beach Red 4 (49) to 0 (15).

Ladies’ pennants will recommence after the Christmas and new year break on January 13.

Reigning men’s first division pennant holders Emu Point Red continued their impressive home form with a massive win over Middleton Beach Black 6 (79) to 0 (34) while Albany Gold showed improved form, with a huge 58-shot win over Emu Point Purple, 6 (93) to 0 (35).

Middleton Beach Gold consolidated second position on the ladder after defeating Mt Barker 5 (79) to 1 (49) as the closest game of the round had Middleton Beach Green taking the points against Denmark 4.5 (58) to 1.5 (53).

In men’s second division the top four teams defeated the bottom four.

Ladder leaders Mt Barker Golf Red maintained their unbeaten run with a solid win over Albany Grey 5 (66) to 1 (40).

Mt Barker Golf White easily took care of Cranbrook 6 (65) to 0 (37) while Albany Brown travelled to bottom placed Walpole and came away with a vital win, despite losing one rink by 25 shots, 5 (60) to 1 (56).

In the final game, second placed Albany Green were too good for Emu Point White 5 (72) to 1 (44).

In men’s third division ladder leaders Middleton Beach White had a strong 30-shot win over Mt Barker 5 (76) to 1 (46) while Green Range defeated Albany White 5 (72) to 1 (64).

Mt Barker Golf Blue won by forfeit over Denmark as Emu Point Blue travelled to Frankland and lost a thriller 4.5 (56) to 1.5 (54).

The Lower Great Southern Bowling League has named its men’s team to contest the annual round-robin tournament to be held in Williams in January.

The team is Matt Mitchell (skip), Len Brown, Richard Plant and Paul Garbellini, Jim Robertson (skip), Sean Brown, Ian Higgins and Dean Offer, Jon Davidson (skip), Clive Bahr, Andy McFarlane and Kelvin Crosby, Kevin McGregor (skip), Graham Bain, Doug Wright and Barry Holt.

Men’s pennants will recommence after the Christmas and new year break on February 10.
