The Albany RSL sub-branch will host two commemorative services this weekend, the first to mark the 106th anniversary of the Charge of Beersheba and the second in honour of nurses.

Saturday’s service to commemorate the charge will take place at the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial on Mt Clarence.

The Charge of Beersheba on October 31 in 1917 was the last successful horse-mounted cavalry charge in history, and the service will be attended by members of the newly reformed Perth-based 10th Light Horse Regiment.

The RSL conducts the service annually on behalf of the 10th Light Horse Troop of Albany, which has started to take more on more responsibility for its organisation each year.

Due to limited parking at the memorial, a bus will shuttle attendees from the bottom of Apex Drive to the top of Mt Clarence for the service.

On Sunday, a service will take place in the Nurses Memorial Garden at Proudlove Parade from 2pm.

The service is held annually to recognise the invaluable contributions of all nurses, not just those involved in military service.

Attendees of the nurses’ memorial service will be invited back to the RSL for an afternoon tea.
