Rovers narrow gap on second spot
Rovers have moved within two points of Phoenix in the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s open competition standings after downing last year’s champions 3-1 at the North Road soccer grounds last Saturday afternoon.
With the sides locked 1-1 at half-time, Rovers were able to break free in the second half to knock home two goals and claim victory.
Bradley Bielecki, Caldon Lortan and Maxim Putilov all found the back of the net for Rovers, while Leroy van den Dool was Phoenix’s lone goal scorer.
In the other Saturday fixture, Caledonians notched their ninth win of the season after easily accounting for bottom side Royals, 9-2.
Frazer Childs extended his lead in the golden boot award with five goals, while Fraser Grant finished with a hat-trick.
Leon Durrant and Hayden Calton scored for Royals.
On Sunday, Polonia and Albany-Bayswater fought out a 2-2 draw.
In the women’s league A competition, Polonia defeated Caledonians 2-1 last Friday night.
Polonia’s Jaimi-Lee Morrison and Racheal Cross scored while Princess Catbagan was Caledonians’ lone goal scorer.
Phoenix remain in second spot after overcoming Grammar Blue 4-1 in the other fixture.
A fast start ensured Phoenix were ahead 3-0 at half-time before a goal to either side in the second half secured the victory.
Tianna Korthius, Shiarne Roth, Jasmine Koster and Heather Bosch all found the back of the net for Phoenix, while Grammar’s Olivia Mason also goaled.
Denmark defeated Albany-Bayswater 3-2 last Tuesday in the men’s masters competition, with Joel Chamberlain knocking in a double for the victors.
Caledonians continued their dominance of the league with a 10-2 win over Rovers to remain undefeated after 11 matches.
In the other fixtures, Old Boys won 7-2 against Cross Keys United, while Polonia beat The Vets 6-2.
Meanwhile, in the women’s league B competition, Polonia Red went down 2-1 to Polonia White, Grammar White demolished Albany-Bayswater 13-0, Denmark White and Port Albany drew 1-1, Denmark Black beat Royals 3-0 and Mt Barker United remain on top after defeating Rovers 3-1.
