Reports of bright green ‘meteor’ flashing across the sky in WA’s Great Southern
Did you see the meteor?
That was the question on everyone’s lips on Facebook on Sunday evening.
Social media lit up with reports of sightings moments after an object lit up the Great Southern sky.
“I was walking on Middleton Beach when a meteorite came overhead,” John R. Jones told the Advertiser.
“It was brilliant white and had a long, green tail. It lasted for about 3-4 seconds.
“I had my camera but it was all over in an instant.”
The sightings poured in from Sharp Point, Kojonup and Kendenup.
They described a colourful green object which crossed the sky about 5pm.
The most detailed report came from Liam Bennett, who hypothesised that the green colour could be due to the nickel and/or magnesium in the meteor.
He said the object travelled from west to east
“I’m praying someone in Albany managed to capture it as it was amazing,” Mr Bennett said.
“The sun was only just starting to go down and was still bright outside. The sheer brightness was crazy.”
One reader said it made her child cry because she thought it was aliens, while another said his son was “worried it was the end of the world”.
There was even one woman who said she thought it hit the ground.
If you saw it, the Advertiser would like to hear from you.
The truth — and possibly a valuable meteorite — is out there.
