Railways midfielders Logan Stubber and Jayden Scott to return from injury in first week of the finals

Railways coach Mark Bayliss says star midfielders Logan Stubber and Jayden Scott will not feature in the last round of the Great Southern Football League home-and-away season but will be right for their qualifying final showdown in less than a fortnight. Stubber has a broken finger that required surgery after the Tigers’ round 10 clash with Albany. The Kleemann medallist has returned to training but will not be risked in Saturday’s dead rubber against the Sharks. Scott missed last week’s win over Denmark-Walpole after sustaining a serious ankle injury in the side’s round 13 match with Royals. Bayliss is confident both will be cherry-ripe for the first week of finals, with the Tigers to host rivals Mt Barker for a spot in the grand final. However, the news is not so good for Jack Steel, who may not get back this season with a broken collarbone. Bayliss said Steel would not play this week and remained in doubt for the early part of the finals series. The Tigers stitched up the minor premiership in a thrilling nine-point triumph over the Lions in round 13 and will face the Sharks at Tigerland on Saturday in round 15 of the regular season. The remaining games in the GSFL will take place on Saturday, with the Lions looking to clinch third spot against the struggling Magpies at Retravision Stadium. The second-placed Bulls will square off against North Albany at Sounness Park. A fascinating story leading into the last round is the race for the Sean Plaisted Medal as the GSFL’s leading goal kicker. Bulls star Zach Jackson leads the way with 57 goals but Sharks veteran Brett Peake (51 goals) and Tigers gun Matt Palfrey (49) are within striking distance going into the final round. Many expect Jackson and Palfrey to battle it out for this year’s Kleemann Medal as the best and fairest player. Jackson was a red-hot favourite midway through the season but a scintillating run of form from Palfrey has him in the mix to win the league’s highest individual honour for a second time.
