Railways Football and Sporting Club has a flash new addition to mark the start of the Great Southern Football League women’s season after the installation of a digital scoreboard.

A $94,000 State Government election commitment has funded the cost of the scoreboard and it will also go towards the construction of a new children’s playground set to be ready for use within six weeks.

The new features are the start of a long-term vision to modernise the club, which has expanded from football to boasting close to 500 members across basketball, netball, cricket and a women’s football teams.

Railways FSC president Andrew Want said the club had secured more than $770,000 for their overall precinct upgrades and had more State and Federal Government grant applications pending.

Mr Want said the next phase of the upgrades would include the long-awaited additions of women’s change rooms and improved disabled access.

“Its pretty promising and pretty bloody exciting, it has been a long road,” he said.

“The City has done an amazing job here through the precinct and just to finish the whole precinct off will be amazing . . . it is good for the whole community.”

Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens said the old club’s facilities needed to grow with its member base.

“I think as a club they have been the one that has been left out of the whole precinct development,” Ms Stephens said.

“The new scoreboard does amazing things and it is only going to value-add to the whole club.

“And obviously with a growing number of kids in the Railways footy club and sporting association, the playground was another addition that was really needed and will be great once it is all ready.”
