Psychological look into surfer shark death earns Sam Carmody’s Flutter a spot in Best Australian Yarn longlist

An award-winning Albany novelist has adapted his usual capacity for lengthy fiction to short prose as a contender in the Best Australian Yarn competition with his brooding surf entry Flutter. The shark attack death of a surfer is at the centre of Sam Carmody’s top-50 short story, with the event sparking a deep dive into human power and the long-term consequences of actions. The 38-year-old said he was “very surprised” to make the longlist with his first entry in the prestigious competition after struggling to produce a piece significantly shorter than his usual novel-length fiction. “Short stories are really hard to write,” he said. “I’m spending so much time trying to write longer things that it seems a huge challenge to believably pack a life and world into 2000 words or so. “An Irish short story writer, William Trevor, calls short stories ‘the art of the glimpse’ — the challenge is choosing what glimpse to give them, which small part that hints at a whole.” The 2500-word yarn opens on the death of ornery surfer Robert “Grimesy” Grimes in a shark attack, and follows the ripple effect his demise has on the bystanders, particularly a married couple who wrestle with epiphanies about each other. Carmody, who teaches literature at Albany’s University of WA campus, said the story’s themes of agency, consequence and tuning in to the universe’s subtle “flutter” messages arose naturally in the writing process. “It’s a weird one as I guess it’s a bit of a risk to start a story with a shark attack,” he said. “I’m a surfer, but I’m also a lifelong bookworm, and I’ve always been particularly fascinated by sharks and how they turn up in stories, in Moby Dick and the Old Man And The Sea. “Writers often return to sharks and shadows in the sea for psychological reasons. “I started with that scene but knew there was something else going on beyond the physical appearance of the shark. It represented something drifting up from the deep in their lives or subconscious. “For me, the story comes to be a bit more about agency, the question of what in our lives do we have the power to change, and teasing out what aspects you do actually have control over.” Carmody said his story was inspired by both a real shark attack event in the south west a few years ago — when only two bystanders stayed to help an injured surfer while the rest fled to shore — and the “poetic energy” of the Great Southern. “I’ve done the cowardly writer thing and called it something else, but it’s a bit of an Albany-like town, with the grumpy surfer reminding me a lot of some of the curmudgeonly locals you meet in the breaks around here,” he said. “As a setting, it’s a beautiful but also powerful and dangerous landscape, which makes it very thematically rich.” The former ABC journalist released his debut novel The Windy Season in 2016 to critical acclaim, winning the 2017 Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction. He has since released his first EP, Shadow In the Dream and is now in the process of writing his second novel, Gracetown. The story will explore the fragility of mental health and the act of picking apart one’s past through the homecoming of a mining magnate heiress who grapples with a premature midlife crisis as she reconnects with childhood friends. The novelist and WAM award-winning songwriter said he was currently in his “writing season”, having always divided his time between his dual passions of literature and music. “They are both my major loves and have been in competition with each other since I was a child,” he said. “I’ve never quite worked out how to do the both at once.” The Best Australian Yarn competition attracted a record 6000 entries this year, with the winners to be announced on November 22 at the State Library of Western Australia.
