Polonia are closing in on this season’s premier league title after moving further clear on top of the table following round 10 of the men’s top tier competition in the Great Southern Soccer Association on Saturday night.

The margin between the league leaders Polonia and the second-placed Phoenix stretched to nine points after a 2-0 win to Polonia in their clash with Albany Rovers.

One goal in each half was enough for Polonia to chalk up their eighth win of the league and with six games remaining are in a commanding position to snare the silverware.

Phoenix blew their chance to stay within six points of the leaders when they drew with last year’s champions Caledonians.

Lewis Bosch scored a brace for Phoenix but the 2-2 half-time score line was how the game finished as the two sides collected one point each. It was a third draw of the season for Caledonians, who are all but out of contention to retain the league title.

Caledonians face Polonia in round 11 this Saturday night while Phoenix tackle Rovers.

Albany-Bayswater and Phoenix both netted double figures in the men’s reserves competition last week.

Albany-Bayswater won their sixth game after thrashing Caledonians 12-0 on Saturday.

Seven first-half goals were enough to end the contest by the break as Cain Pietropaolo finished with four goals and was well supported by Jason Woonings who chipped in with a hat trick.

Phoenix sit second-last in the reserves standings but they won by a big margin over Albany Rovers, 11-2, to move to 14 points.

A hat trick from Cyprian Rogozinski guided Polonia to a hard-fought 5-3 triumph against Albany Royals in the other round 10 fixture.
