Polonia finish third after beating Phoenix

Polonia claimed third spot in the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s open league standings after a crucial 2-1 victory against Phoenix at the North Road soccer grounds last Saturday night.

Jack McNamee and Jason Wilson found the back of the net for the victors as they jumped above Rovers on the league table in the final fixture of the season.

Shannon Korthuis scored Phoenix’s only goal as they retained second spot in the standings.

Meanwhile, Albany-Bayswater were victorious in a high-scoring affair against Royals in the afternoon fixture.

With the scores locked at 1-1 at half-time, the game loosened up in the second half, with Albany-Bayswater piling on five goals to run away with a 6-3 win.

Kwa Si Say, Nic Pietropaolo, Mohammad and Asgher Nawroozi and Alex Kinnear all scored for the winners, while Trevor Pocock, Roger Mejia Paez and Nathan Griffiths were Royals’ goal scorers.

Caledonians finished off a stellar season to win 1-0 against Rovers on Sunday.

Kieran Loveridge scored the only goal of the match in the first half as Rovers dropped to fourth spot after the loss.

Last Friday night, Denmark maintained their perfect record with a 5-0 win against Polonia in the women’s league A.

Leah-Rose Winter and Ebony Thompson scored doubles, while Josie Cloud found the back of the net as well. In the other fixture, Caledonians defeated Grammar Blue 2-0.

In the men’s masters competition, The Vets defeated Albany-Bayswater 4-3 to move off the bottom of the table, while Denmark overcame Cross Keys United 1-0.

Meanwhile, Rovers went down 2-6 to Old Boys and Caledonians remained undefeated after accounting for Polonia 3-1.

Port Albany defeated Polonia Red 3-0, while a forfeit to Denmark Black in round 15 has allowed Mt Barker United to claim the women’s league B title.
