Police praise members of the public who came to boy’s aid after he fell off rocks in Torndirrup National Park

Police have praised three members of the public who rushed to the aid of a young boy after he fell off rocks in Torndirrup National Park on Saturday. Emergency services were called to Cable Beach, near The Gap, about 4.30pm after a nine-year-old child fell into the water during a 3.5m swell. Sergeant Vaughan Mackay said three members of the public responded to calls for help from the boy’s sister. They tried to used an angel ring to give the boy something to hold onto but it is understood he was unable to reach it. Fortunately, the boy washed into shore with the natural movements of the Southern Ocean. The trio of bystanders — two women and one man — then came to his aid on the beach. “It was believed the boy was semi-conscious. They’ve assisted him and he’s regurgitated quite a bit of water,” Sgt Mackay said. “These members of the public have been absolutely fantastic, and to be honest it could have been a very different story.” Albany Sea Rescue were notified of the emergency but were not required to attend. The boy was taken to Albany Health Campus after he ingested water and sustained some abrasions. “He was relatively uninjured but he was admitted to hospital basically for observation,” Sgt Mackay said. “He’s a really lucky kid, really lucky. “We’re aware of who those members of the public are. All credit to them for jumping in and assisting, our praises go out to them.”
