Phoenix chasing a top two spot in Great Southern Soccer Association division one competition

Phoenix remain in reach of a top two finish in the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s division one competition after their comprehensive win over Bayswater on Saturday.

The 6-1 victory puts them within three points of the second-placed Rovers with eight rounds left to play in the season.

Zeke Timmer found the back of the net twice for Phoenix, who have now won three games on the trot.

Beau Timmer and Corey Plug also bagged a goal each before Bayswater conceded an own goal as they fell to a sixth defeat of their campaign.

In the other scheduled division one match between the Stirling Rangers and the Rovers, the Stirling Rangers forfeited with the Rovers awarded a 3-0 win as a result.

In the division one women’s competition, the Caledonians jumped up to third spot on the ladder thanks to a thumping 10-0 win over the Sharks on Friday night.

Eight separate goal scorers joined the action with Jo Orr (two goals), Maddie Manolini (two) Shelley Thompson (one), Ella Scamozzi (one), Hayley McDonald (one), Dee Millar (one), Megan Orr (one) and Steph Grant (one) all hitting the score sheet.

Elsewhere the Rovers crushed the Sonics 17-0 and Mt Barker dropped points for the second time this season as Phoenix held them to a 1-1 draw.

In the men’s division two, Trent Eikelboom finished with a brace in the Caledonians 4-1 triumph over Bayswater.

Riley Marsh and Harrison Smith were the other scorers for the Caledonians who consolidated second spot on the table and now sit two games behind the Rovers.

Phoenix were 3-0 winners over Bayswater in the other fixture.

In the women’s division two, the Rovers prevailed over the Sharks 6-0, the Stirling Rangers battled out a 1-1 draw with Polonia, the Denmark Rezzies claimed a 2-1 win over the Denmark Carnabys, Denmark Dream slumped to a 4-0 loss against Bayswater and the Phoenix Ladies eased to an 8-0 win over Mt Barker.

In the men’s division three fixtures, Bayswater remain undefeated after a gritty 2-1 win over the Old Boys, Denmark defeated the Caledonians 4-2 and the Rovers edged past GSG 4-3.
