Staff at the Southern Regional Medical Group are holding a Christmas decoration competition at the medical centre in Albany, where patients can vote for the best decorated waiting room.

“It’s been such a hard couple of years with COVID,” administration team leader Sarah Humphreys said.

“We thought it would be a great way to have fun together, and to give some cheer to people who need it.”

The group of 35 medical centre staff members, including administration staff, nurses and doctors, were divided into four teams and tasked with decorating one of four waiting rooms.

“There were rules that we had to follow, everything had to be recycled, repurposed and reused,” Ms Humphreys said.

“The patients really love it, and they’re having a really good time, walking around the waiting rooms and talking to each other, it’s been a really good thing for the patients”.

The two most popular rooms are the Grinch-themed waiting room and the Polar Express waiting room, which features a train made from repurposed foam eskies.

The centre is also running several children’s competitions, a colouring-in competition and another to find Santa and a reindeer.
