Organisers of Footy Stars Weekend eager for return of major Albany Community Hospice fundraiser in February
One of the biggest regular fundraising events for Albany Community Hospice is set to return next month at a new time of year.
West Coast Eagles premiership captain Shannon Hurn will be the guest of honour at this year’s Footy Stars Weekend, February 17-18, which will again feature a Saturday night dinner function followed by a golf day on Sunday.
In its 12 previous iterations, the event has taken place in November, but a desire to ensure good conditions for golf during a slightly quieter period on the calendar saw it shifted to February this year.
The event did not take place last year to allow for the change of scheduling and according to organiser Todd McGregor it has left many in the community eager for its return.
He said the field for the golf day has already been filled, and only limited spots remained for the dinner at Motel Le Grande on February 17 where Hurn will be joined by another former Eagles champion and event regular Glen Jakovich.
“There is a factor of that that shows it’s been missed, because we haven’t done it for over a year now,” Mr McGregor said.
“I have had a few people coming up to me saying they wondered what had happened, it’s good that they look forward to it every year.”
He said Hurn, who holds the record for the most games played at West Coast, is a keen golfer who was looking forward to playing in Albany.
“He’s popular because he was a good honest performer and leader,” Mr McGregor said.
“He’ll fit right in down in Albany as he’s a good country boy too.”
